They Have Arrived!

Today we saw our first mushrooms!

After a good rain on Saturday, several of the logs have started to fruit! This initial fruiting means that the shiitake spawn has successfully colonized the logs. Although only a few logs have pushed mushrooms, many of the logs are probably colonized by now and just waiting on a nice big rain to help them push. We will watch carefully as these mushrooms continue to grow and develop and hope that the rest of the logs follow suit.

With a successful colonization, these logs are in good shape and will be ready for some more serious production next spring! Until then, if we see some storm clouds coming our way, we may be headed to the farmers market with some samples!
