If a Tree Falls in the Woods…

Log harvest is here! Not quite as exciting as shiitake harvest, but that’s not stopping us! Its chilly out but hauling logs works up a sweat!

With the help of family and friends, we expect to harvest over 500 prime substrate logs in the next two days. Dr Jeanne Mihail is here to lend her expertise and ensure the quality of the logs as we push to harvest these logs before it is too late. Our logs not only need to be the right species, but they also need to be a manageable size to carry, and as straight and free of excessive limbs as possible. Fortunately for us, my mother has an abundance of experience selecting quality logs for shiitake production!

Once these logs have been harvested, we have to let them sit for a bit before inoculating them with shiitake spawn. This will give us some time to gather the last bit of supplies and the spawn before inoculation day!
